Startup Studio Indonesia, a government-run accelerator, is dedicated to supporting the growth of Indonesia’s digital economy by empowering early-stage startups for maximum growth.
Two recent program alumni, Surplus Indonesia, and Broom.id, stand as a testament to this success. Both Startups have demonstrated impactful innovations that contribute significantly to the rapid development of Indonesia’s burgeoning digital economy.
Surplus Indonesia: Navigating Success and Sustainability
Surplus Indonesia, a standout from Startup Studio Indonesia’s alumni, successfully tackles food waste challenges in Indonesia. As the world’s second-largest producer of food waste, the country’s commitment to sustainability is evident in Surplus Indonesia’s impactful initiatives.
With support from Startup Studio Indonesia, Surplus Indonesia has enhanced its business performance. Through the acceleration program, the startup collaborates with various businesses to sell excess high-quality food via its app.
“In the beginning, Surplus Indonesia prioritized organic marketing through communities or word of mouth. As we began to scale up, we shifted our focus to intensify marketing efforts,” explains Agung Saputra, the Co-founder of Surplus Indonesia.
With its promising growth, Startup Studio Indonesia manages to continue facilitating Surplus Indonesia with mentorship assistance throughout its development.
Eventually, this support led to Surplus Indonesia’s success in securing early-stage funding from Salam Pacific Indonesia Lines Ventures last year, enabling the startup’s expansion to tier-one cities with a total of 10,000 active app users.
Broom.id: Redefining Indonesia’s Auto Industry through Startup Studio Indonesia
While Surplus Indonesia emphasizes the impact of Startup Studio Indonesia’s mentorship programs on its growth, Broom.id highlights how Startup Studio Indonesia’s connections have benefitted its growth.
Broom is a digital platform for the used car ecosystem, providing short-term working capital to showrooms through a “buy back” program. Broom aims to facilitate easier access to capital and a more organized business operational system within the used car ecosystem in Indonesia.
“To promote Broom’s business model, we extensively leveraged networks from other startups, as we focus on the Business-to-Business (B2B) model. The program has opened many new opportunities for us as a relatively young startup,” expressed Pandu Adi Laras, CEO, and Co-founder of Broom.id.
As an alumni of SSI Batch 5, Broom achieved rapid growth post-graduation, securing pre-Series A funding of USD 10 million (equivalent to IDR 155 billion) for its business development.
Creating a Sustainable Startup Ecosystem
Surplus Indonesia and Broom are exemplary cases of Startup Studio Indonesia alumni successfully applying training materials for business development. Beyond these successes, numerous alumni from various batches have achieved commendable milestones.
For instance, 11 graduates from SSI Batch 3 boosted their company earnings by 153.1%. Moreover, B2B startups saw a remarkable growth of 792.2%, while B2C startups experienced a solid 107.2% increase.
One of Startup Studio Indonesia’s goals is to create a sustainable digital startup ecosystem in Indonesia through knowledge transfer. Since 2020, the program has proven its curriculum works for business growth and empowered its alumni to foster impactful networks within the community.
As it sees promising growth, the program plans to help 150 improved digital startups graduate by 2024 and hopes to keep this success going forward.
